June 1 to June 30, 2025
“The compositions I arrive at are grounded in architecture, landscape, aerial topographies, and abstract geometry. I am drawn to the underlying psychology within spatial forms and the built environment, where the configuration of architectural/organic elements can be shaped to personify one’s inner experience.”

“Found materials and the process of collage lie at the foundation of my practice. I am drawn to the natural ephemera of daily life, responding to the inherent energy within everyday (often throwaway) objects. I allow my materials to guide the process, moving through the construction of a piece with no set intention or planned outcome.”

There is kindness in the ashes
March 1 to April 30, 2025
“The figures and objects he chose to bring to life share some talismanic functions as well, as the carriers and even guardians of memory. Still more, they share a quality of liminality, a kind of ambiguity or disorientation that comes from a condition of betweenness…” —John Beardsley, James Castle: Memory Palace
Inspired by a residency at the James Castle House in Boise, Idaho, artist Marc Dombrosky created new works in response to art by and the environment of artist James Castle.

“Inspired by the once-ubiquitous ‘Kodaguide’ — handheld reference cards used to determine exposure and other camera settings — this project reflects on the rules and tools that undergird popular photography. To see beyond the recommendations provided by these cards, each one is photographed individually and then meticulously dissected with a manual digital process. Painstakingly, all of the technical numbers, example images, as well as explanatory text are covered up by copying and pasting dust and scratches from the surface. The resulting compositions are then enlarged to emphasize this digital mark making in concert with a single word that remains in its original location. Each word is an oblique reference to familiar photographic tropes — light, shadow, flowers — or recurring judgments about the conditions of image making — normal, appropriate, correct.”

Standard Size
January 1 to 31, 2023
“Standard Size began as a playful act of resistance against the typical example photos on packages of ink jet paper. To purge this information from view, the stock photos and other imagery are physically removed from the packages, and the marketing text is covered up with colored masking tape. Each modified surface is then lit and re-photographed to emphasize the gestures of redaction. The result is a series of flat compositions that reconsider the creative opportunities held in the materials themselves.”
