"The pastoral decay of the old South is Haygood’s subject, pushed to partial abstraction in his prints. The paintings complete the cycle, creating a world in which machinery rots into a new kind of organic life. The results are both haunting familiar and other-worldly. Shafts, blades, sagging belts, cogs and ropes released from their intended function float in space. These are landscapes with no horizon line and nothing to anchor the movable sea of parts. Machines become plant cuttings, their loped limbs starting to bud with new life."
